This selected Data Scientist candidate will serve as an integral member of the team on a commercial business group ingesting, organizing, storing, creating, and disseminating data and insight for a vast array of internal and external information consumers.  This position applies techniques and theories from math, statistics, data science and engineering, visualization, and high performance computing with the goal of extracting meaningful data to address complex problems.  The data scientist will serve as the subject matter expert (SME) to the software engineering, weather and imagery analysis operations, research science, and business management teams.  This position requires someone who has the passion, organization, and vision to not only take ownership of their own technology stacks but to also work with various teams to create cutting edge products and services.  If you have a passion for the atmospheric and geospatial sciences plus the background to handle complex data workflows in a fast-paced dynamic environment, we have an exciting opportunity for you.
 

Essential Job Functions
• Build high-performance algorithms, prototypes, predictive models and proof of concepts
• Design and develop advanced algorithms for the purpose of analyzing large amounts of data from disparate sources
• Discover and communicate meaningful patterns from large data sets
• Employ elements of artificial intelligence, machine learning, statistics, and database systems to develop analytic methodologies
• Identify and implement techniques to improve data reliability, efficiency and quality
• Collaborate with the sales, operations, and management team to develop new tools and systems for the purpose of creating value add solutions for both internal and external customers
• Fundamentally – take your knowledge of the physical sciences along with your experience in the computer sciences to do something great and change the way the world looks at, consumes, and uses data
 
Required Qualifications
• Fluency in a variety of programming languages including Python, Perl, C/C++, JavaScript, and shell scripting
• Extensive experience designing relational databases with MySQL and/or PostgreSQL
• Experience developing in a Linux environment
• Experience with commercial and open source GIS software/libraries including ESRI ArcGIS, Erdas Imagine, QGIS, GeoServer, and GDAL
• Experience with version control software (Git)
• Degree in physical science, computer science or equivalent experience
• Background in Differential Geometry, Statistics, Abstract Algebra, Linear Algebra, Multivariate Calculus, and Experimental Methods
• Excellent written and oral communication skills

Desired Qualifications
• 5-10+ years of relevant professional experience
• Experience with atmospheric model data formats such as GRIB and NetCDF
• Experience creating graphics with GrADS and/or various Python data science libraries
• Familiar with API development in Python/Flask and/or Perl/Plack
• Experience with Amazon Web Services (EC2, S3, EBS, RDS, Lambda)
• Experience creating raster and vector data sets
• Familiarity with distributed processing in a clustered environment
• Experience working with customers and strategic partners to understand their needs
